It was early in the day. The sun was poking half-heartedly from behind some greyish clouds. Few people were out and about, but Vance was one of them. His baby girl Nona was talking gibberish in her strollar; Sunny was walking off a leash beside them. She was a loyal dog and didn't attack unless attacked.
He pushed the strollar around the corner and made his way to the news stand for the morning paper. Vance took one off the pile and handed the man five dollars - three more than it costed - and told him to keep the tip. It was the same as every other morning.
Until he heard a girl yelling. Vance asked the news stand man to watch Nona and Sunny and ran to see what was the matter. At the far corner he saw a man clearly making the girl uncomfortable and hurried forward. Giving the other a shove, he gripped the front of the mans shirt and said through gritted teeth, "Leave her the hell alone." warmth rushed to his hands and the mans shirt caught fire. He took off without another word; Vance turned to the girl. "Are you alright?"

Lydia hadn't intended to meet anyone she knew so early in the morning. Gavin was a vampire and though he could walking in the sun now, he was still cautious. Jazz also wouldn't be in town so early because the full moon had just passed and she was recovering somewhere deep in the castle's dungeons.
So being attacked wasn't exactly something she expected.
"Hey, let me go." Lydia said when the man grabbed her arm.
"But you have something I need. The gift-"
"I said let go!" Lydia yelled, trying to kick him away.
The man's grip tightened and Lydia yelled louder, struggling. Then everything kind of slowed down and sped up at the same time. Another man entered the scene and then she was free and fire - Lydia defiantly saw fire - and the man vanished.
"Yeah, I'm alright." she brushed off her sleeves and pushed her hair from her eyes. "Thanks for helping me." she said, but avoided his eyes, when she asked, "Did you cause the fire? Or have I spent to much time with the dead?"
