Kyle jumped from the tree and landed with a hollow thud on the forest floor. He had leaves and bits of bark in his handsome blonde hair, but oh well. Searching in the pocket of his jeans, he pulled out his lighter and lit the cigarette sitting in the corner of his mouth. He didn't care that smoking was bad for him, especially when he needs all the strength he can get. It felt amazing to just inhale whatever the hell was put into them.
Sitting against a tree not far from the one he'd jumped from, Kyle released clouds of smoke while he sharpened a random stick with his army knife. Somewhere real close to him, he could hear the dried leaves and twigs breaking. Someone was out here at five in the morning? Oh well he shrugged.

The sky was a bubbly red, the grass a tasty orange. It was a pretty illusion accented by green fuzzy clouds and twelve foot tall sunflowers radiating a bright blue and pale silver. Jerrika had been walking around the grounds, enjoying the quiet in her head-Not hearing everyones thoughts felt good sometimes. A few weeks ago, Jerrika discovered that if she concentrated hard enough, she could see color. Each person in the Castle had their own color, their own special shading. Stopping by the edge of the forest, Jerrika wrinkled her nose in deep concentration. She began by taking deep breaths of the heavy air around her, filled with wet grass and crisp wilted leaves -the smells of Autumn. Eyes closed, her illusion dripped away like wet paint as Jerrika let her mind search the area for a squirrel, or maybe a bunny. A smokey grey began to fill the inside of her mind. "That's weird," she muttered to herself as she opened her eyes and continued to walk "most animals are dark grey." Jerrika loved the sound of breaking twigs, and crunching leaves. Sometimes she wished she were a telekinetic instead, so she could pile leaves faster. Making a quick mental check, most minds were still asleep. Jerrika had finished the pile some minutes later, and made a running leap into the leaves giggling at the happy way they crunched under her weight. Wading though the pile, Jerrika's mind got that fuzzy grey again, but this time there was an emotion attached to it- Carefree? The sound of wood against metal brought Jerrika farther into the forest until she saw a man, smoking. "That explains the color," she said to herself before taking slow steps toward the man. She tried to remember if she'd ever read him in the castle. "Smoking is bad, but you know that already." Jerrika shrugged before sitting cross-legged on the forest floor. "I'm Jerrika, who are you?"

Kyle looked up, eyebrows raised. The kid sitting across from him couldn't have been older than ten, and she had the nerve to tell him smoking was bad? "Yeah, I know that. I'm not an moron." he snapped before catching himself. She looked young, this Jerrika girl, and despite his nature of snapping people's heads off when they tried to talk to him, he didn't want to land her in a puddle of tears.
"I mean, yeah, I know. Name's Kyle." he said, resuming sharpening the stick. Kyle moved his eyes to watch the girl, but kept his head bowed. This kid is strange, he thought. "So what brings you to my patch of hell - or heaven. Depends really." well that was a fail, he rolled his eyes at himself.

Jerrika's eyes locked onto Kyle's face narrowed in anger, who was he to think she was strange when he didn't even know her yet!? Shaking her head slightly, Jerrika reminded herself that he was trying to be nice to her, even trying to keep a conversation. Her face thawed into a frown of thought as she said “Well, I'm here mostly because of you... ” It was partially the truth, she wouldn't have gone that far into the forest if it weren't for his color fogging her brain. Playing with a loose string on her blue plaid shirt, she said added on “I love to play in the leaves, I was playing in the leaves earlier before I found you.” Jerrika let her face melt into a grin "Wanna see a trick?"

Because of him? Not creepy at all. He laughed mentally and put out his smoke on the bottom of his shoe. "Sure, I'd love to see a trick." he said, not looking at her again. Instead he examined his newly sharpened stick before throwing it dart style into a tree just next to the girl.
"Sorry if I scared you." he chuckled. Not really, but whatever. Standing up, he held out a hand to help her up. "I'm just assuming you have to be on your feet too if you're going to show me this trick. So, let's see it." I've got things to do and they don't include little girls. That was a lie. I have nothing to do. I just like to be alone, and feel uncomfortable around others That wasn't typically something he admitted every day.

Even as she asked her question, Jerrika frowned inside as she sat smiling at Kyle. His brain patterns were different from most minds in the School. Theirs were pretty predictable, but Kyle's had a lot of twists and waves, hard to follow but not impossible. Eyes wide, surprise splashed across her face as the stick Kyle had been sharpening just seconds before struck the tree only inches from her head. Already Jerrika had to fight to keep her tears from spilling over. Sniffing, Jerrika rubbed the tears away only to find Kyle standing in front of her offering his hand. Being eight wasn't easy. “Don't assume Ky," her exasperated sigh gave a brief glimpse of her patience beginning to break. "It's just as bad as smoking,” she said sucking in a lung full of air, her cheeks puffed up like a squirrels to hold it in. Taking Kyle's extended hand in her own, Jerrika pulled Kyle down as she stretched her free hand to touch his forehead. Staying focused on a spot that wasn't there, Jerrika began to let her air out in a slow stream moving her head in a figure eight. "...Snowflakes" she decided and they began to materialize from her breath.
A slow smile stretched across Jerrika's face as the new Flakes fell to the ground like seeds from a dandelion, sprouting transparent stems that climbed upwards into the pale sky using the same figure eight motion as their creator. The stems twisted and shrunk and expanded itself of Jerrika's will until she was satisfied with the outcome. Jerrika stole a glance at Kyle's expression, worried about how he was feeling. Looking back at her illusion, Jerrika willed certain parts to fill in- black coloring, and certain parts to fill in a creamy white. Slipping her hand out of Kyle's as well as dropping the other from his forehead, Jerrika stood and stepped back to look at her mobile illusion. Jerrika clapped her hands in delight- a black hat that tilted every so often to spill out dozens of bunnies. The bunnies are so cute!

Kyle was beyond confused and found himself pulling away from the girl. She was weird and confusing and he just wanted to get away from her. Hilarious actually, how such a tiny person was threatening his guard. Then it hit him - Telepath. Yes, a strange version, but still. A telepath was the only thing she could be.
"You know what squirrelly? I'm not all that found of mind tricks. Don't touch me again." That was harsh, but whatever. He was entitled to his opinion and right now it was that she wasn't going to be in her best health if she stayed around him. "Go back to school or whatever rock you crawled out of. You're just setting yourself to be hurt if you stick around me."

"But Ky, I want to be friends with you," Jerrika looked up with pleading eyes ...I can help you... The last words Jerrika whispered into Kyle's mind, letting it ring in his head as every bad thing that had ever happened in Kyle's past flashed before him. She wasn't trying to hurt him, just show him that she could be his best friend. "I see it in your head," Jerrika winced "I can... keep you from hurting other people." Jerrika wasn't actually sure she could, but she could try. Jerrika took a step towards Kyle, using the cliche she's heard so many times "What do you have to lose?"

For five in the morning, this girl had a pretty active imagination. "I don't do friends. Never have, never will." he kept his voice cold and his eyes bitter. She was pissing him off, but what really did was when she used her bloody powers again, not only to whisper in his mind but to show him everything he'd buried so deep inside himself. His father leaving; his mother getting sicker and sicker; his first love and murder victim-
"Get the fuck away from me!" he roared and gave her a hard shove with every intention of sending her flying back against a tree. He hadn't heard anything she'd said after the pictures started, didn't quite frankly give a damn either. If this little brat isn't going to listen to me when I'm reasonable, then I'll just show her the wolf in me.
"Hasn't your stupid mother ever told you not to talk to strangers?" he said venomously, taking a few steps towards her. "Did you ever wonder why that was? No, no, smart ass, I'm talking - Don't interrupt me. That's because your precious mommy didn't want you to meet someone exactly like me. See how calm you thought I was - a little scary yes, but you didn't get the hint. I was trying not to hurt you, because I don't like to hurt little kids. But you're just to thick headed! You think just because you're a telepath that you can do whatever you want whenever you want right? Isn't that what your bitch of a mother taught you!"
Kyle was yelling again now, swearing and if it weren't the end of the full moon cycle, he'd probably have lost it and transformed, killing her. She should consider herself lucky that I can't transform. That would be a nightmare and a half right there.
But his thoughts and actions and words weren't set to be tolerant of the girl anymore. He just wanted to make her cry and run away. Who effing cared if she told somebody what he did. Kyle'd warned her, so it was her own fault she got hurt.
